Forest management for greater biodiversity
The Fumiharu Forest Foundation is a non-profit general incorporated foundation that receives forests, donated by owners for whom inheritance or business succession had made management difficult, and manages them with biodiversity as its central focus. Guided by the principle of "contributing to the regeneration of rich ecosystems and the revitalization of local economies," the foundation approaches these forests with a long-term view, looking 60 years ahead.
Two fields: Tokachi and Tenryu
The foundation practices sustainable forest management across two regions — Tokachi, Hokkaido, and Tenryu, Shizuoka. The South Tokachi forest surrounding SUGOMORI is one of these fields. A portion of the foundation's forest, the "Ubaka Forest," has been certified as a Nationally Certified Sustainability Site in recognition of its contribution to biodiversity conservation, and is internationally registered as an OECM (Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measure) — an area outside protected zones that nonetheless contributes to biodiversity conservation.
Sharing the forest's value
The foundation is also engaged in activities that share the value of the forest through VR tours and eco-tours, as well as consulting work aimed at passing on forests that risk being abandoned to the next generation. A stay at SUGOMORI is one such point of connection between forest and people.
